The Department of Health and Human Services Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs)

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) designates Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is charged with recruiting health care professionals for communities that lack access to primary health care. The National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program (NHSCLRP) provides financial incentive for the recruitment and retention of primary, dental, and mental health care clinicians.

For application and more information go to nhsc.hrsa.gov

At the STATE level, NHSC grants matching funds directly to states to operate their own loan repayment program. The State Loan Repayment Program is part of the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Bureau of Health Professions (BHP) overall strategy to improve access to underserved communities. Primary care health facilities located in a federally designated HPSA are eligible for this program. Eligibility requirements and benefits vary from state to state.
